All this week the cooks and program folks were checking the weather channels for forecasts. At least four were checking probably a minimum of four sites each. Well, every one of them was different and it changed by the hour it seemed. So, on Thursday a decision was made and menus modified. Well, lo and behold we had virtually a perfect shooting day. Temp was short sleeve weather, blue skies, very little breeze but enough to move the smoke and let us all breath that sweet aroma that we all love.

To start this shoot summary, we are going to thank all that helped make this another spectacular kickoff shoot for our 2025 shooting season. Cooks, helpers, scorers, weather sorcerers, range officers and just a host of folks that are too many to name as someone will be left out. We had visitors from Arizona, Kentucky and Tennessee that got to participate in our shoot and see our fellowship, friendship and fun on full display to spread the word on our successful program. This would not have been such a successful day without everyone pitching in to make it so smooth and rewarding and that includes the shooters who always welcome all to the shoots and help anyone needing assistance.

We had 23 shooters, 13 off hand and 10 bench. There were four new shooters and several returning that have not shot with us for over a year. Our shooters shot 10 roundball at the two bullseye Tatonka NMLRA at 50 yards target and 10 roundball at the five bullseye Tatonka NMLRA target at 25 yards and we had some outstanding scores.

There were the normal gun issues for ignition and our trademark dry balls with a minimum of three of them and a very unique complaint of the cooks. About 10:30AM the cooks cranked up the grill and the coffee had been on all morning so between the relays and when the targets were turned in everyone was complaining how distracting the smell of the food was as it was getting cooked and the coffee gave them the shakes, so concentration was messed up and the shakes were bad. Oh well at least they were not complaining of the difficulty of the targets this time!

We gave out to the first five place shooters prizes ranging from pork tenderloins, pork chops, chicken, ham and some really nice bratwurst. Heck, the other shooters were yelling for them to share and throw it all on the grill which brought a lot of smiles and even grimaces on folks’ faces.

The results were as follows:
Off Hand:
1st – Brian Palmer
2nd – Tony Corhan
3rd – Brad Thomas
4th – Billy Townsend
5th – Chris Greene
Bench:
1st – David Armstrong
2nd – Tim Coleman
3rd – Doug Crabtree
4th – Doug Burgess
5th – Jim Connily
The drawing for the donated handmade quilt by our member Robbie, and it is a beautiful quilt, to honor The Talking Rock BPShooters club was held and the quilt was won by Mr. Jim Gravely. Congratulations Jim! Thank you, Robbie, for all your efforts for designing, sewing and donating this beautiful quilt for the club to benefit from.

Congratulations were given to anniversaries and birthdays as well being celebrated by our members. The trade blanket continues to be a very integral part of our shoots to help fellow shooters with their gear and traditional firearm inventories.

As the food was prepped the hawk and knife throwing area was again seriously populated by a lot of folks with a lot of ribbing and challenges on making the hawk stick to the lumber. There might even have been a side bet or two I heard, but trading pirate damsels is frowned upon. We shot our program, awarded the prizes, fed over 35 folks, cleaned up the range and were gone by 12:30PM.

Our next shoot will be delayed one week. Our normal 4th weekend falls on Memorial Day weekend and with graduations, trips etc. we decided to push the shoot back one week to the 31st so not to interfere with your family activities. To those that missed our shoot today from surgeries or hangovers, and are recovering we missed you and look forward to you all getting back into shooting with us healthy and strong.
