It seemed for most of the area Friday night and Saturday morning there had been – or was a bit of – moisture in the air. We had 22 shooters, 10 bench and 12 off hand and several mentioned how they drove through some rain getting to our shoot. We also had two spouses, four guest lookers, and four administrators that did not shoot. So not too bad for a potential bad weather day. Several of or regulars had family commitments or were not sure of the weather. We do shoot rain or shine unless it gets called by Thursday before the shoot.

So on to the shoot. We started our safety brief at 9:00am and the target set up with a hot range shortly thereafter. Our first target was a running deer at 50 yards to practice for opening of hunting season. The sky was grey and threatening and at the end of the round thunder and more threats came on.

Our next targets were at 25 yards, another running deer and a standing whistle pig, with five shots each. And then it started. No breeze or wind but it built to a pretty good rain, but everyone kept popping caps and priming pans. All our shooters stayed focused and we did not seem to have as many gun issues as the first round.

The rain quit just when the range was called cold – at virtually the same time, and targets gathered, range cleaned up and we talked under a beautiful blue sky. We faced the weather challenges and completed our match. But we hung in there and stuck with it.

Our two rounds were added together after our normal dry ball and IT WAS A DOOSEY. It took all my 120 pounds pulling to get it out. You can also see our first round targets, the running deer, in the background. All 22 were stretched out at the 50 yard line.

We had flash in the pans, hang fires, caps popping with no big bang events throughout the match. Our shooter scores were ranked in our two shooting categories, bench and off hand. Folks we did have a unique gun break. A main spring on a lock. The shooter carried a spare main spring! What? Who does that? I mean shooters bring spare rifles but a lock main spring? He changed it out and kept on popping caps.

Our shoot results are as follows:
Off hand:
1st – Bob Wilson
2nd – Tony Corhan
3rd – Scott Youngblood
4th – Billy Townsend
5th – Brian Palmer
Bench:
1st – David Armstrong
2nd – James Whitner
3rd – Steve Boeticher
4th – Charlie Russell
5th – Beaver Fisher

Meat prizes were awarded from pork ribs, pork tenderloins, brats and chicken for our top five shooters in each category. Ten prizes awarded out of 22 shooters. We keep on growing, so we may have to start giving out more prizes for more places. Congratulations to all our shooters and thank you all for coming to support TRBPS whether you shot or not.

We were done and gone as if we had never been there by 12:00 noon. Several folks met down at the local Boxcar Grill for lunch and to review, fuss, cuss and discuss topics such as the match results, how everyone shot and the dang targets the program Manager selects each month.

Our next shoot is October 25th, 2025, with gates open around 8am and shoot begins at 9am. Thank you all for making the Talking Rock Black Powder Shooters Charter Club the ‘Beast of the East’, and to all be safe and healthy till we meet again for our next shoot. Keep your eyes on our website www.trbps.com where we post all our write-ups under the events blog tab along with many more pictures. Chris G has been working very hard at creating our channel on another hosting site called “Rumble“. We have had a few issues with our current channel getting censored and it creates work for Chris to edit his videos. https://rumble.com/user/TRBPS . Very simple site to use and it brings a fresh look to all of our shoots so check it out.

Please keep all our shooters that could not attend for various reasons in your thoughts and prayers until next month all. If there are any questions or comments, please feel free to reach out to anyone with ideas, compliments you name it.
