We started the day off in remembrance of 9/11, shooting once again beneath the commemorative 9/11 flag bearing the names of the victims. In addition, on a beautiful, sunny fall day that started off at a brisk 55 degrees, we remembered those who couldn’t be with us to shoot today.

Much needed this morning

We had 24 shooters alongside at least 11 observers and helpers, with 16 shooting bench and 8 shooting offhand. With only five benches to go around, the high turnout for bench shooting created a slight 15-minute delay finishing our first round. Naturally, nobody seemed to mind the extra time—it just meant more opportunity to swap stories, tune up rifles, browse the trade tables for goodies or just stagger around the range bumping into things.

New Heart Tomahawks

We kicked off our safety brief and course-of-fire description right at 9:00 AM. For our first round, we chose the NMLRA running boar target, which we haven’t shot in several years since the NMLRA discontinued the match for now. We took 10 shots at 50 yards, set up just like the course of fire in Friendship: bench shooters shot the boar left-to right, while offhand shot right-to-left. A few enterprising shooters attempted to “modify” their targets for a better sight picture, but the ol’ meanie program manager put the kibosh on that, much to the quiet disappointment of the gallery.

Chris’s Smoke

Our second round featured our July commemorative target celebrating our nation’s 250th anniversary of independence. We fired 10 shots – one per at individual bullseyes. Truth be told, we picked this target because we can’t use them next year, and we had just enough left over from our June shoot to pull it off! After wrapping up the second round, we turned in our targets and set up for the third relay: 25-yard pistol for anyone interested. We used the standard NMLRA 25-yard pistol target. Believe it or not, we shot the exact same bullseye target last week on a smaller paper background and saw almost a 10% drop in overall scores this time around. Whatever happened to “aim small, miss small,” folks?

Patriot targets at 25 yards

Rifle scores were combined, while pistol targets were scored separately so no one was penalized for not packing a handgun. Our top finishers are as follows:

Offhand:
1st: Billy Townsend
2nd: Tracy Derrick
3rd: Bob Wilson
4th: Erik Rolle

Bench:
1st: Tim Lambert
2nd: Mike Lamb
3rd: Beaver Fisher
4th: Bobby Witherington

Pistol:
1st: Tracy Derrick
2nd: Billy Townsend
3rd (Tie): Eric Rolle & Jim Behrend
4th: Austin Darby

Trade Table Wares

Congratulations to all our winners! Remarkably, that makes two shoots in a row where no one had to confess to a dry ball—or at least, no one got caught.

Tim’s Great Plains Rifle

Our next shoot is scheduled for October 24. Gates open at 8:00 AM, and shooting starts at 9:00 AM. We’ll have a Halloween theme, plus a club cookout (weather permitting). We moved the cookout up a month this year just to build in a safety cushion against bad weather. The club will provide the main course, condiments, plates, and eating utensils. If you’d like to contribute, side dishes and desserts are greatly appreciated!

The Flash & Blast are crazy out here

We look forward to seeing everyone in October for more friendship, fellowship, and fun. Thank you all for making the Talking Rock Black Powder Shooters the best club around. Without you, we wouldn’t be who we are.

Muzzle of the month

Until next time: stay safe, get healthy, and keep your powder dry!
