We welcomed 19 shooters and 16 family members and friends to a day that began with rain, drizzle, and a low, misty fog that clung to the field like it wasn’t going away. It was one of those mornings that makes you second-guess whether the weather will ever break—until the first shot is fired. As soon as shooting began, the smoke drifted and mingled with the morning mist, creating an atmosphere that felt rugged, nostalgic, and oddly perfect for our final event of the season. Such matches the collective character of these rag-tag vagabonds wielding smoke-poles.

Throughout the day, at least five members who had been absent due to personal or family health issues stopped by just to reconnect with the group. Their return was a highlight for all of us, and we’re grateful they are recovering and looking forward to getting back on the firing line in 2026.

We opened the safety brief around 9:00 a.m. just as the drizzle tapered off. Traditionally, our end-of-season shoot uses the famous Running Boar target. Our seasoned shooters saw it and began setting up out of habit—though they’d been told, very clearly, to stay out of the target box this year. Naturally, they did not. And one of the perks of being the program designer is the ability to teach a gentle lesson when needed.

So, the Running Boar was ceremoniously swapped out for a brightly colored turkey target. Several shooters had to make the walk of shame to return their original target and retrieve the turkey. Ten shots at 50 yards into a wet, muddy backstop produced a satisfying, unmistakable sound. Our ever-observant video reporter, Chris (“Les Newsman”), hollered, “It sounds like a wet sack of concrete hitting pavement!” He wasn’t wrong.

We wrapped up the first round under clearing skies, a soft breeze, and plenty of smiles as the weather shifted from dreary to delightful. For the second round of ten shots, the experienced shooters once again assumed they knew what was coming when they spotted our traditional 25-yard turkey target—the one that always draws grumbles about the turkey’s head blending into the background.

But clearly the lesson from Round One hadn’t sunk in. This year, the target was changed again, this time to a five-turkey sheet: smaller birds but with sharper contrast. One turkey even sported a bullseye lovingly nicknamed “the Georgia Heart Shot.” Chris, our video man, quipped that with so many turkeys on the field, it looked like they were organizing. Whether he meant the paper turkeys or the ones holding the guns remains a matter of debate.

Our Shoot Results Are As Follows:

After scoring the flock, ranking shooters, and handing out prizes, we wrapped up our final shoot of 2025 in high spirits. Everyone went home with something—15-pound turkeys, hams, pork, chicken breasts, bags of potatoes, pumpkin pies, pecan pies, and more.

Lunch was its own celebration: Bobby’s famous grill-cooked burgers; Becky’s baked beans and potato salad; Susan’s coleslaw; Robbie’s Tuna Mac Salad and Pineapple Coffee Cake; trays of cookies and brownies; and David’s custom sheet cake featuring the TRBPS logo. It was a feast worthy of the season.

This year also marked the creation of a new honorary tradition—the TRBPS Dry Balls Club. Becky and Sam became the inaugural inductees, receiving PGIF reminders, a ten-dry-ball scorecard, and a medallion to be worn proudly at each shoot. A moment of lighthearted history was made.

As we packed up, more than one person echoed the immortal words of Mr. Carlson: “I swear, as God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.”

From all of us at TRBPS, we wish you a safe, joyful holiday season surrounded by friends and family. We look forward to seeing you again in February 2026 for more fellowship, laughter, and plenty of good shooting.

And in true holiday fashion, we leave you with a reminder of one of the greatest promotional moments ever broadcast: the legendary WKRP Thanksgiving Turkey Drop.

It was a great shoot and iffy weather was not a problem. What became a problem for me was the lesson on where to place your target for scoring. On the DESK dummy! I think the already scored targets were getting placed on a chair next to the desk and that is where I laid my target for a score of 0. Its laughable situation.
